What is volunteering?

Definition of volunteering: Volunteering is the commitment of time and energy for the benefit of society and the community, the environment or individuals outside one's immediate family. It is undertaken freely and by choice, without concern for financial gain.

Who are Event Volunteers?

Event Volunteers are the spirit of the community events. We are a team of volunteers that will be recruited to support the delivery of the events.

What skills are needed to be an Event Volunteer?

We are developing many different volunteer roles; all of which require motivation, enthusiasm and commitment! We have aimed to make roles that are open to a wide range of people but certain roles may require specialist skills. If you have any particular skills that you think would be relevant to the roles please include these within your application. An outline of the roles can be on the individual event pages on 

What will Event Volunteers do??

Event Volunteers support the delivery of the community events by carrying out various volunteer roles before and during 'event time'.  An outline of the roles and tasks for each event can be found on individual event pages on

How many volunteers do you need?

Each event is very different and our events range in size from six to one hundred volunteers.  The average is 40 to 60 volunteers per shift on an event, but no two events are the same, the exact requirements for each event can be worked with our Volunteer Management Team.

What age do I have to be to volunteer?

Applicants must be over 16 years of age by the first day of the event. Each role has its own age restrictions depending on what it entails.  Some roles will only be available for people aged 18+.  There is no upper age limit on volunteers - you are never too old to volunteer.

What is the time commitment?

We expect our Event Volunteers to be able to commit to a minimum of one shift volunteering across each event.  For Team Leader or training roles this increases accordingly.

What will I get out of being a volunteer??

Volunteering provides you with a greater sense of wellbeing and personal development. This opportunity will offer you a chance to: be involved and support the delivery of the large community event and evoke a team spirit, you’ll also benefit from civic pride associated with being a member of Event Volunteers. Let’s not forget that you’ll also meet new friend develop new skills, and have fun!

What will I gain from the experience as a young volunteer?

As a young volunteer (aged 16 - 18) you will take away the same benefits as other Event Volunteer members. It will also provide you with an opportunity to build great skills and receive training which you can include in your CV and job applications. 

How will you ensure that volunteers are valued?

Event Volunteers are the 'Spirit of the Events'. To ensure you are fully valued and supported, we have developed a specific volunteer policy which will enable recruitment, selection, training and management of volunteers to be carried out to a high standard.?

Will volunteering with Event Volunteers affect my Social Protection payments?

You can volunteer for as many hours as you like while on benefits as long as you continue to meet the conditions for receiving that benefit.  You may be required to produce a SW1 form to your local Social Protection office and we can provide this for you.

If I apply am I automatically selected?

No, applying does not guarantee that applicants will be successfully selected. There is a recruitment and selection process in place for all roles.

Is the role I want guaranteed?

No, we will match volunteers based on their motivations, skills, experience and number of roles available; this will not always result in an applicant being offered their preferred role.

I am having technical difficulties with the application form, what do I do?

How do I withdraw my application if I decide I no longer wish to volunteer with Event Volunteers?

We would encourage you to contact us before withdrawing and let us know if there is anything we can do to support you in continuing your volunteering journey. Can I swap or choose another volunteer role??

No, if you have been selected for a role it is because the role matches your skills and experience. However, you may be selected for more than one role and this will be communicated with you directly.??

How can I find out more about the volunteer role that I've been offered?

For more information on the roles please go to and select the event you are interested in volunteering at.

Do I need to be physically fit to volunteer?

No, there will be a range of volunteer roles available which are appropriate for varying levels of physical fitness.  However there are times when you may be standing for long periods in the outdoors – which may be in the Sun or Rain!

Will accommodation be provided for volunteers?

No, it will be the responsibility of volunteers to obtain and finance their own accommodation, if required, during the an event.  If you are travelling and need assistance please contact us and we will provide you with a number of alternatives.

If I am a member of Event Volunteers do I have to pay for my own refreshments?

Each event is unique however we anticipate the provision of support, in terms of refreshments, for Event Volunteers during each event, this is usually hot or cold food and snacks available on site.

We appreciate that many people have special dietary requirements however due to the nature of us dealing with third party food vendors in off site locations it is not always possible for us to meet these requirements. Where you have specific requirements please advise us in advance by email and we will reimburse costs of these foods stuffs (such as vegetarian / vegan / celiac etc.) Details of refreshment and other benefits is listed on each individual event page on our web site

Do you cover transport costs to and from Event Volunteers orientation / training sessions and events?

Where possible we ensure that all orientation / training sessions and events are accessible by public transport, and by that we mean no more than one bus or train journeys from Dublin City Centre.  Where a venue is not accessible by Public Transport, we will with our event partners endeavour to provide a shuttle bus to / from a public transport hub.  Details of transport links will be email to you in advance of each event.

I live abroad, what about travel and accommodation costs?

Travel (from outside of Ireland) and accommodation expenses will not be provided. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to arrange, and pay for, their own travel and accommodation.

Will there be training for volunteers?

Yes. In order to join us at an event each volunteer will have to complete orientation / training. This will give you fantastic preparation and a chance for you to get to know other Event Volunteers before you start your volunteering experience.

What is the purpose of volunteer orientation / training?

To prepare you for an event and ensure you feel comfortable and confident for your role. All volunteers will receive orientation, role and venue specific training.  Further information on these training sessions will be emailed to you.

When will the training take place?

Training / orientation is notified to you in advance by email and is generally 3 to 7 days in advance of an event.

What should I wear to orientation / training??

We want you to be comfortable during training, so please dress casually. There may be activities so flat shoes are recommended.

Where will volunteer orientation training be held?

For each event we hold the training in the proximity of the event location, however for ease for easy of access we use County Hall, Main Street, Swords, Fingal County Dublin for a number of our trainings. A frequent bus service operates from outside County Hall.  Details of the location for your training will be confirmed to you via email communication.

I have applied, what happens next?

Your application will commence the selection process to become a member of Event Volunteers. We will be in contact directly with you, via email to advise you of the outcome.

Is there anything I need to do in the meantime?

If you have completed the information required within the 'Basic Information', 'Additional Information' and 'Interests' on your volunteer page then no. Please note, at this stage, you do not need to enter any details within the 'Qualifications', 'Availability' and 'Goals' tab

I am not sure if my application form is complete??

Please check that you have included the information required within the 'Basic Information', on your volunteer profile page. If so then your application is complete.

Can I make changes to my application?

You can make changes to the 'My Profile' and 'Basic Information' tab within your application.

How do I re-access my profile?

You can re-access your volunteer profile page via "My Volunteer Page" and fill in the appropriate details.

How will I know if my application has been successful?

All volunteers will be notified of the outcome of the selection process.

If I am not selected will I be able to appeal the decision?

No, there is no process for applicants to appeal the decision and all applicants were advised at the start of the application process that not all applicants may be successful.

I am working full time. Can I still volunteer?

Yes, there are many opportunities to volunteer outside of work hours. Just inform us of your availability and we'll see what's open to you. Many events will require volunteers outside normal working hours.

As a person with a disability; can I apply to be a volunteer?

Yes and you have been asked to provide any applicable details within your application.

As a person with a disability; will you provide reasonable adjustments so I can carry out my volunteer role?

Yes, we always aim to match volunteers with a role that is both suitable and enjoyable. Please do let us know of any particular access requirements so we can support you effectively.

As a person with a disability, will I be able to volunteer alongside my support worker / personal assistant?

Yes, we endeavour to support all volunteers as best we can and please do let us know of any support requirements.  We actively encourage support workers / Personal assistants to join you during your volunteering experience.
